Microfield’s EnergyConnect Deploys First Automated Synchronous Reserve Services System

PORTLAND, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Microfield Group, Inc. (”Microfield”) (OTCBB:MICG - News) today announced that its subsidiary EnergyConnect, Inc. (”EnergyConnect”), has become the first and only provider to deploy a completely integrated and automated solution for Synchronous Reserve Services (SRS) from its participants to the electric grid. SRS is the first line of defense that grid operators maintain for responding to system disturbances and has historically been a service only supplied by large power plants. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently approved provision of this service by consumers in the PJM Interconnection. SRS is purchased by the grid operator (PJM) from large users that can quickly increase output from on-site generation or reduce their electricity within ten minutes. EnergyConnect’s system enables participation in this service by consumers who otherwise could not.

EnergyConnect has installed at its control center a “SCADA” (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) connection that continuously communicates directly with the PJM Independent System Operator control room to receive signals requesting an SRS event. EnergyConnect’s automated system then communicates an alert to the Participant’s cell phone, land line, pager, and e-mail. Additionally, EnergyConnect’s system communicates directly with the participant’s Building Automation System (BAS) to execute the start of on-site distributed generation or building load reduction.

John Stremel, EnergyConnect’s Senior Vice President of System Development said, “EnergyConnect is now delivering a fully automated and integrated service to its participants with operations equivalent to those of any generation power plant in the PJM control area. Our system provides a solution that assures delivery of these services to the grid, enabling increased reliability. More importantly to our participants, this ensures that they will automatically respond to the communication and will continue to share in the significant revenue for delivering theses service to the grid.” Gene Ameduri, President of EnergyConnect, added, “Two major universities on the East Coast will soon be integrated into our SRS delivery system. This is a significant step forward in this valuable market.”
